Frequently Asked Questions...UPDATED!
Thank you for your interest in 1:10 Skincare®! We realize that many of the concepts and innovations with which 1:10 Skincare® will revolutionize the skincare market are new territory, even for many sophisticated skincare users. Therefore, we have drawn up these FAQs to help you better understand just how different and exciting our developments are. What’s with the copper?
Copper is a very necessary mineral for human health and has shown great promise for skin regeneration in clinical trials. We have found a unique way to incorporate organic-compliant copper in a formulation that serves many useful functions such as reducing oxidation and enhancing antimicrobial protection. Unlike other products which utilize copper or similar metals, our proprietary process stabilizes the ingredients, providing unprecedentedly long-lasting effectiveness, without the need for artificial or "natural" preservatives.
But is it safe?
Copper toxicity is only a concern when the mineral is ingested. In sufficient doses, free copper (CU2+) consumed this way could pose a hazard. However, our research indicates only about 1%-2% of total copper is in free ion form, since copper likes to react with organic particles. Therefore, it seems VERY unlikely that there would be any free ions on your skin as a result of any copper-containing product, and even more improbable that any noticeable amount is making it through your skin. As long as you don't eat that given product, you should be fine. If you are especially concerned (specific copper allergies, Wilson's Disease, etc.), don't use the product when you are going to perspire. To be safe we advise people with these ailments to consult their physician first.
A quick search through the FDA website will readily indicate that some products have a maximum allowable free copper content of 2500ppm, 200ppm or 100ppm, and none of those are skincare products. For instance, here is the FDA listing of food additives and, where applicable, the maximum allowable copper (in PPMs). Please note copper is Generally Regarded As Safe (GRAS) and no PPMs are discussed. There is no such standard for skincare products.
For example, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has set a limit of 0.1 mg/m3of copper fumes (vapor generated from heating copper) and 1 mg/m3 of copper dusts (fine metallic copper particles) and mists (aerosol of soluble copper) in workroom air during an 8-hour work shift in a 40-hour workweek; the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has set an action level of 1.3 mg/l in drinking water. No such limits have been placed on any skincare products.
In the dermatology text, Copper and the Skin, Drs. Jurij J. Hostynek, M.D., and Howard I. Maibach, M.D. of the University of California at San Francisco's School of Medicine, noted: "Data available indicate that copper may have noxious effects only following chronic oral (or parenteral) exposure to high amounts of the metalloelement, particularly upon chronic oral ingestion with food (e.g., water) that supplies the organism with more than 5 mg/kg of copper per day"
and
"Investigating the cutaneous absorption of copper in the skin, applied as copper(I) oxide and in its elemental form in an ointment at 20% [200,000ppm] over a four-week period, the authors concluded that dermal exposure to copper at those levels does not present a risk of systemic toxicity, nor does it have any untoward effects in the skin exposed."(Gorter RW, Butorac M, Cobian EP. Examination of the cutaneous absorption of copper after the use of copper-containing ointments. Am J Ther 2004; 11:453–458)
What about the botanicals?
Botanicals have been used in medicines and to enhance beauty for thousands of years, but actual plants are a far different cry from trying to utilize derivatives of them in commercial cosmetics formulations, until now. 1:10 Skincare®’s proprietary technology preserves the effectiveness of the botanicals so that every time you open the jar or bottle it’s not merely "like getting a fresh dose"…it IS a fresh dose! This enables us to provide you with some exciting ingredients that would otherwise be, in effect, lost to you by the time they reach your face. Ingredients like macela oil, a potent source of flavonoids with excellent anti-inflammatory, healing and antibacterial properties, but only effectively available in
1:10 Skincare® is thrilled about the world of possibilities our technology has opened up and pledges to bring you the best in botanicals in all of our products, as fresh as if you cut them yourself.
Ooh, I feel it tingling! Is that OK?
Some people can feel our products tingling upon the first few applications. This is perfectly common, not just in ours, but with many other skincare formulations, and it just means the actives are now working to improve your skin.
You guys have really set some high standards for yourselves!
Technically speaking, that’s not a question, but thanks for noticing! We are committed to 100% natural all the time, 100% organic whenever possible (and because of the proprietary technology noted above, it’s possible for us most of the time), and minimizing impact on the environment. We also source our ingredients only from free-trade vendors, and never, ever test on animals. We are also working with our ingredient vendors to obtain from them copies of all the various certifications and approvals these ingredients have achieved, and as soon as these are available, we will post them on our website. We want to be 100% transparent with you, and that includes providing you information to bolster our case that our products are 100% natural (and usually 100% organic!) and will always be.
