FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions...UPDATED!
Thank you for your interest in 1:10 Skincare®!  We realize that many of the concepts and innovations with which 1:10 Skincare will revolutionize the skincare market are new territory, even for many sophisticated skincare users.  Therefore, we have drawn up these FAQs to help you better understand just how different and exciting our developments are.

What’s with the copper?

Copper is a very necessary mineral for human health and has shown great promise for skin regeneration in clinical trials. We have found a unique way to incorporate organic-compliant copper in a formulation that serves many useful functions such as reducing oxidation and enhancing antimicrobial protection. Unlike other products which utilize copper or similar metals, our proprietary process stabilizes the ingredients, providing unprecedentedly long-lasting effectiveness, without the need for artificial or "natural" preservatives.

But is it safe?

Copper toxicity is only a concern when the mineral is ingested. In sufficient doses, free copper (CU2+) consumed this way could pose a hazard. However, our research indicates only about 1%-2% of total copper is in free ion form, since copper likes to react with organic particles. Therefore, it seems VERY unlikely that there would be any free ions on your skin as a result of any copper-containing product, and even more improbable that any noticeable amount is making it through your skin. As long as you don't eat that given product, you should be fine. If you are especially concerned (specific copper allergies, Wilson's Disease, etc.), don't use the product when you are going to perspire. To be safe we advise people with these ailments to consult their physician first.

A quick search through the FDA website will readily indicate that some products have a maximum allowable free copper content of 2500ppm, 200ppm or 100ppm, and none of those are skincare products. For instance, here is the FDA listing of food additives and, where applicable, the maximum allowable copper (in PPMs). Please note copper is Generally Regarded As Safe (GRAS) and no PPMs are discussed. There is no such standard for skincare products.
For example, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has set a limit of 0.1 mg/m3of copper fumes (vapor generated from heating copper) and 1 mg/m3 of copper dusts (fine metallic copper particles) and mists (aerosol of soluble copper) in workroom air during an 8-hour work shift in a 40-hour workweek; the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has set an action level of 1.3 mg/l in drinking water. No such limits have been placed on any skincare products.

In the dermatology text, Copper and the Skin, Drs. Jurij J. Hostynek, M.D., and Howard I. Maibach, M.D. of the University of California at San Francisco's School of Medicine, noted: "Data available indicate that copper may have noxious effects only following chronic oral (or parenteral) exposure to high amounts of the metalloelement, particularly upon chronic oral ingestion with food (e.g., water) that supplies the organism with more than 5 mg/kg of copper per day"

and

"Investigating the cutaneous absorption of copper in the skin, applied as copper(I) oxide and in its elemental form in an ointment at 20% [200,000ppm] over a four-week period, the authors concluded that dermal exposure to copper at those levels does not present a risk of systemic toxicity, nor does it have any untoward effects in the skin exposed."(Gorter RW, Butorac M, Cobian EP. Examination of the cutaneous absorption of copper after the use of copper-containing ointments. Am J Ther 2004; 11:453–458)

What about the botanicals?
Botanicals have been used in medicines and to enhance beauty for thousands of years, but actual plants are a far different cry from trying to utilize derivatives of them in commercial cosmetics formulations, until now.  1:10 Skincare®’s proprietary technology preserves the effectiveness of the botanicals so that every time you open the jar or bottle it’s not merely "like getting a fresh dose"…it IS a fresh dose!  This enables us to provide you with some exciting ingredients that would otherwise be, in effect, lost to you by the time they reach your face.  Ingredients like macela oil, a potent source of flavonoids with excellent anti-inflammatory, healing and antibacterial properties, but only effectively available in Brazil up until now.

1:10 Skincare® is thrilled about the world of possibilities our technology has opened up and pledges to bring you the best in botanicals in all of our products, as fresh as if you cut them yourself.

Ooh, I feel it tingling! Is that OK?

Some people can feel our products tingling upon the first few applications. This is perfectly common, not just in ours, but with many other skincare formulations, and it just means the actives are now working to improve your skin.

You guys have really set some high standards for yourselves!
Technically speaking, that’s not a question, but thanks for noticing!  We are committed to 100% natural all the time, 100% organic whenever possible (and because of the proprietary technology noted above, it’s possible for us most of the time), and minimizing impact on the environment.  We also source our ingredients only from free-trade vendors, and never, ever test on animals.  We are also working with our ingredient vendors to obtain from them copies of all the various certifications and approvals these ingredients have achieved, and as soon as these are available, we will post them on our website. We want to be 100% transparent with you, and that includes providing you information to bolster our case that our products are 100% natural (and usually 100% organic!) and will always be.

Sounds pretty good.  So how do I use this stuff?
Directions differ depending on the 1:10 Skincare® product used and what other skincare products you combine with it.  We are working diligently to provide our customers with a full system of skincare products as soon as possible.  In the meantime, please see questions below on individual products and interactions.

Where in my routine should I apply CX Immortal Infusion?
Our new infusion should be applied after toner but before moisturizer. Use three to six drops and apply wherever you would like to see the appearance of fine lines diminish, even out tone, or add radiance to your skin. Let sink in for at least one minute before applying moisturizer or sun screen.

When in my skincare routine should I apply CX Toner?
Apply a thin layer of CX Toner to face after cleansing with your usual cleanser. Allow to dry thoroughly before adding another product. May be used twice daily. If also using other products that contain retinoids, AHAs or BHAs, start by using every other day to make sure irritation does not occur.

When in my skincare routine should I apply CX Rich Nighttime Moisturizer?
CX Rich Nighttime Moisturizer is designed to be the last step in your nighttime skincare routine. Take a pea-sized amount and rub between the palms of your hand, then spread over face. A white cast may be left behind upon application of the product; it will disappear after a few minutes. If also using other products that contain retinoids, AHAs or BHAs, start by using every other day to make sure irritation does not occur.

Is the active ingredient in 1:10 products compatible with natural oils, like argan oil?
The active ingredient in 1:10 products is compatible with virtually any natural oil, including argan oil.

Can I use my favorite sunblock with 1:10 products? When should I apply it?
Yes! Not only are 1:10 products safe to use with sunscreen, our research strongly suggests the active ingredient in 1:10 may be a powerful enhancer to most sunblocks.  You may apply sunblock after applying 1:10’s moisturizer and allowing it to absorb into your skin.

Who should I contact if I have any questions about usage or other issues not addressed here?

...and about those fancy-pants "High End" skincare lines...

For this month's entry, we figured we'd answer the many questions we have received about our products vs. Those REALLY Expensive Ones. So, here is a brief compare-and-contrast of our products with "high end" skincare:

High-end skincare products almost always have long, artificial ingredient list, increasing the chances of causing skin irritation, and they usually include controversial ingredients, such as parabens, which are beginning to be considered as serious health concerns. (Google that.)

In sharp contradistinction, the 1:10 Skincare™ line features a short ingredient list, isfar less likely to irritate, and contains only ingredients that are 100% compliant with the strictest organic standards.

Another major difference is how botanicals are used within the two formulations. High-end brands include botanicals strictly to entice the customer. (Botanicals at such low concentrations they provide no meaningful benefit.) Meanwhile the 1:10 Skincare™ line includes potent botanicals specifically selected for
a) their properties
b) synergy with our revolutionary active ingredient, and
c) in the ideal proportions to be effective.

Lastly, nobody but 1:10 Skincare™ has our exclusive formulation and no juggling of commonplace ingredients by other brands can compensate for this difference.

But what about cosmeceuticals?

Another series of questions we have gotten centers around how 1:10 Skincare™ compares to other "cosmeceutical" lines.

Glad you asked.

There would seem to be some similarities:

1- Both give users the perception of having "science behind them."
2- Both will give the user some immediate result in the form of visible improvement, as well as improvement with continued use.

But the differences end there.

Cosmeceutical skincare is also notorious for:

Exceptionally harsh formulations; i.e., these products can be very irritating to the skin.
More so than even high end skincare, they often causes far worse problems than they set out to solve.

In contrast, 1:10 Skincare™ heals skin gently, naturally and effectively.

Like high end skincare, cosmeceutical skincare has a long, controversial, ingredient list including assorted artificial ingredients, most notably parabens and SLS.

However, 1:10 Skincare™ stands out among all categories with a short ingredient list that is 100% compliant with the strictest, food-level organic standards.

Many of the most common active ingredients in cosmeceutical lines (vitamin C, vitamin E, etc.) are notoriously unstable. Their ability to be active has probably already diminished before the consumer even opens the packaging. These ingredients will surely degrade to "practically inactive" once the package is opened. In order to control this instability, artificial ingredients are frequently incorporated into their formulas.

This is as opposed to 1:10 Skincare™, which has a revolutionary active ingredient (i.e., Cuprovix™) that is both:
a) outrageously stable
and
b) which magnifies the stability and active life of the other ingredients.

Cosmeceutical skincare is not legendary for providing a pleasant experience to the user.
In general, the packaging is unattractive and the formulas are almost unanimously highly unpleasant in look, texture and fragrance.

Meanwhile, 1:10 Skincare™ gives the user superior effectiveness with an infinitely more enjoyable user experience.

Cosmeceutical skincare does not offer much appeal to consumers who shy away from products sold in infomercials or in vending machines. (We wish we were kidding.)

1:10 Skincare™ offers a more exceptional adoption experience both in distribution and in terms of its innovations.

1:10 Skincare™ - How Nature Stops Time.

Friday, November 4, 2011

"But, um, why ANOTHER all-natural skincare line?"

We've heard a few murmurings to this effect from some cynical corners and, as is our way, we'd figure we'd address them.

Regardless of their claims, prior to 1:10 Skincare™ there has been no effective skincare line that can truly claim to be natural/organic and effective. Why? Until now the approach of most of these "all natural" lines has been to take standard formulations (for toners, serums, etc.) and simply remove the artificial ingredients. The primary goal has been "naturalness" and not effectiveness.

Skincare lines have a very difficult choice to make: choose between using artificial chemicals, alcohols or having a products which spoil almost as quickly as fresh produce. (Consumers are becoming increasingly cynical about claims of natural or organic when they recognize parabens in the ingredient list.)

1:10 Skincare™ is immediately effective, does not spoil (because our active ingredient, 1:10 Skincare™ is also a spectacular, 100% organic compliant preservative) and is formulated with only food grade ingredients.

Until 1:10 Skincare™ there has been no effective skincare line that can truly claim to be natural or organic and effective.

While most “natural” or “organic” skincare lines appeal far more to the “green” than “chic” customer, often alienating the latter. Our products and packaging will simultaneously satisfy both. Too many times "green" is the equivalent of a hair shirt, a badge worn to show how one sacrifices and suffers for a good cause. But it doesn't have to be that way and, in fact, it won't have the broad appeal necessary for effective change unless and until green is the superior choice.

  • Sadly, "all natural" skincare lines also often overload ingredient lists with unstable vitamins, extracts and essential oils to give the illusion of effectiveness. There are a few problems with this approach; this a scattershot approach, to include everything that can be found hoping against hope something in it works.

  • Many of these ingredients are skin irritants or allergens.
Including too many ingredients sharply diminishes the efficacy of a product rather than enhancing it.

We have created our formulas by sifting through thousands of ingredient options to choose only those which are truly effective while minimizing the number of people possibly subject to irritation.

Happy Skin

There are things worth reading and then there are things worth rereading. We just came across this article about food that perfectly explains our philosophy about skincare. We've seen it before, but it's worth a second look because it's good advice for anything you put in or on your body. (PS-- We've talked a bit about our active ingredient, Cuprovix™, but we're so excited about it does that we forgot to mention where it came from. It grew out of organic farming, and our belief that the best things for your body come from the land and the sea.)

An illustration of a basic principle.

You may remember this post. Here is a visual to help you understand some of what that post addressed.

Behind the scenes.

One of the most gratifying aspects of launching 110 Skincare™ and of this blog running concurrent to this event is that you get to "watch it, live!" as it unfolds.

This is a little bit of drama, because every business in the history of, uh, business, has had a different path to success. The only thing that is assured on that path to that success is: "it wasn't a straight line over smooth and level terrain."

A lot of* other companies are adamant about shielding their consumers from anything that's not sunshine and lollipops.

But we have been where you are.

So we think our relationship with our consumers should be not just one of "we sell/you buy" but something additional to that, a new dynamic that embraces your feedback, opinions, suggestions and comments in a new, usable and relevant way.

To do that we have to let you guys in, at least a little. You have to be free to take some peeks behind the curtain. Why? In a career that reaches many combined decades in business and skincare, etc., we know that the right word at the right time could have made a monumental positive influence on an outcome; too often corporate hubris stands as an unfortunate firewall.

The road to business nirvana is littered with the debris of companies and individuals who didn't listen, didn't pay attention and at the core of it, forgot what it was like to be the one on the other side of the counter. In many cases, you see that scenario play out. The chef who forgets what it was like to be a line cook, the general who can't recall ever being a lieutenant, the Sr. V.P. who has no memory of ever being an intern.

Any entity built by people with very limited memory is an entity built by people with very limited futures.

This sort of communication is the cardiovascular system of a company, and it is vital to keeping the thinking fresh, relevant, and meaningful. In an ideal world, a company is thinking what its customers are thinking. That is for what we strive. Too many companies are seen to impose their version of "better" on its consumers. (Do you really need examples?)

Much how we have set out to permanently transform the skincare industry, we also believe we can, at the same time, remake how a company and the people who purchase its products can be made materially better in a new, cooperative dynamic. The great, GREAT team we have assembled here love what you love, and love it the way you love it, and think of it the way you think of it.

So, in the coming weeks, look for our mission statement. This is not something cobbled together by some A-List B-School wiz kids, or what our PR people are telling us to put out, but what we are declaring to you are the values we hold to be important and the things we consider crucial in how we interact with our public, our suppliers, etc.

We're thrilled you're coming along from Day One.

Buckle up.
